Understanding what makes up healthy skin will help when choosing anything to improve your skin.
As a licensed cosmetologist in the state of New Jersey since 2016, I learned this information.
However, I haven’t used it recently so I read an article on WebMD to refresh my brain.
Here is an overview:
The skin is made up of three layers that have various jobs.
- The outer layer is called the epidermis and it protects your skin from the outside world.
Key Point: The Epidermis is made of multiple things but the key thing to take in regards to vitamins is choosing one with Keratin because it is the main piece of this layer.
- The middle layer is called the dermis and it contributes to skin elasticity.
Key Point: The Dermis is home to collagen and elastin, two vital things to keep skin looking fresh and not tired
- The most inner layer is called the subcutis it protects your organs and keeps in heat.
Key Point: The skin is an amazing organ
The skin has dependent relationships with Keratin, Collagen, and Elastin lets call these proteins the three amigos.
When thinking of selecting a vitamin to help with the skin I challenge you to take a different approach. Select supplements that include at least one of the three amigos.
Choosing supplements that incorporate these proteins instead of just vitamins that can help with skin gives you the certainty that you are targeting correctly.
If you want something to work well you need to give it what it needs to function.
I searched for supplements that included each of the proteins mentioned and I found a few options on The Vitamin Shoppe’s website.
- Tres Beauty
- Dr. Axe Multi Collagen
- Keratin Hair Booster
While looking for options I noticed my search often mentioned hair and nails. I recalled back in cosmetology school my teacher constantly telling us that hair, skin, and nails use the same proteins to grow.
This is why a pregnant women “glow,” they have beautiful hair, skin, and nails because they are getting the extra nutrients needed to build those proteins. We will get more into this a bit later.
Vitamins are not necessarily the answer to having the best skin. They can contribute to improving it over time by offering things each layer needs to create those proteins.
In the end, what your body breaks down is what contributes to any part of your physical health.
Skin needs the three amigos to stay in its best condition.
Eating foods that help provide Keratin, Collagen, and Elastin will give you that extra security so your skin is given the best chances to look beautiful.
Foods To Eat
- Eggs
- Nuts
- Berries
- Tropical Fruits
- Bell Peppers
- Kale
- Beans
- Fatty Fishes
- Shell Fishes
- Chia Seeds
After researching and asking the right questions this post turned into something completely different. I understand now that choosing the right vitamins for the best skin is the wrong question.
We should be asking what supplements and foods will provide us with the protein we need to build our skin in the best way.
Popular beauty brands who invest enough money into having quality products understand the importance of protein. They prove it by showcasing products that include the three amigos.
Take the time to read the ingredients to some of the beauty products you own at home. Maybe even do your research and you will see what I mean.
I hope you enjoyed this post. Feel free to leave a comment or make a request for more posts like this.
